What a continuity sheet is
A continuity sheet is the take-by-take record the script supervisor keeps for each scene. It ties every take to its setup, marks which takes the director wanted, notes the timecode, and captures the small physical details, a rolled sleeve, a half-full glass, which side the hair is parted, that have to match when you cut back to the same scene or shoot it again next week.
Get it wrong and continuity errors slip into the final cut, or the editor spends a day guessing which take was the keeper. Get it right and the edit almost assembles itself. This sheet gives you one row per take and a column for each thing you need to remember.
What is on the sheet
- SceneThe scene number, so the sheet lines up with the script.
- Slate / setupThe camera angle or slate letter for this group of takes.
- TakeEvery take number, logged in order under its setup.
- Circle / selectWhich takes were circled, and which one is GOLD, the director's pick.
- TimecodeRecord-run timecode in and out, so the editor finds the take fast.
- WardrobeWhat each actor is wearing and any change mid-scene.
- Props / actionHero props, their state, and the action a matching angle must repeat.
- Hair / makeupParting, blood, sweat, tears, anything that must match on the reshoot.
- Continuity noteThe free note that saves an argument in the edit three weeks later.
How a pro fills it in
Head the page
Production, scene, interior or exterior, day or night, date. One sheet per scene so a reshoot never mixes with another scene's notes.
Log setup, then takes
Write the setup or slate letter for the angle, then log each take number in order underneath as they roll.
Mark the select the moment it happens
Circle the take when the director circles it. Flag GOLD for the pick, while you still remember why it was good.
Write the timecode
In and out for the take, so nobody scrubs the whole card looking for it later.
Capture the continuity
Wardrobe, props, hair or makeup, and any action note the next matching angle has to repeat.
When to use it
Use one sheet per scene on any narrative shoot: short film, feature, spec, student project, or a commercial with dialogue coverage. Print a stack the night before, clip them to a board in scene order, and start a fresh page every time you move to a new scene. Keep the circled and GOLD takes obvious, because that is the first thing the editor looks for.
